Sokoto state is located in the north-west geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Its capital is the City of Sokoto. Bordering the Republic of Niger to the north, it also shares boundaries with Kebbi state to the west and south, and Zamfara to the south and east. Sokoto State has 23 Local Governments.
People and Culture
Sokoto is dominated by Hausa and Fulani people. Other minority groups include the Zabarmawa and Tuareg who also speak Hausa as a common language.
Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy; the people grow cash crops such as sorghum and millet for export. They also heavily engage in animal husbandry.
Geography and Climate
In terms of vegetation, the State falls within the Savannah Zone. Rainy season starts late and ends early; the dry seasons starts from October and lasts up to April in some parts and may extend to May or June in other parts. The rainy season on the other hand begins in most parts of the State in May and lasts up to September or October.
The topography of the state is mainly of the famous Hausa plains of Northern Nigeria.

Higher institutions of learning in the state include Usman Danfodio University and Sokoto State University.
Interesting Fact
The name Sokoto is the anglicised version of the local name, Sakkwato, which is of Arabic origin, representing suk, “market”.
