Katsina is a state in north-central Nigeria, whose name is derived from Katsina city. It was formed from the northern half of Kaduna state in 1987. It is bordered by the Republic of Niger to the north and by the Nigerian states of Jigawa and Kano to the east, Kaduna to the south, and Zamfara to the west. The state consists of 34 local government areas.
People and Culture
The main ethnic groups are Hausa and Fulani (sometimes grouped as Hausa-Fulani).
Farming is a major occupation in the state. The major crops produced in the State are millet, guinea corn, groundnut, cotton, maize, beans, rice and wheat. The State is the largest producer of cotton in Nigeria. Livestock production is also a major occupation of the people. some fishing.
Geography and Climate
The State extends from the tropical grassland known as the Savannah to Arid Zone to the North. It enjoys a tropical climate; there are two main seasons; wet and dry season.
April is the warmest month of the year. The temperature in April averages 30.8 degrees Celsius. In January, the average temperature is 21.2 degrees Celsius. It is the lowest average temperature of the whole year.
