Traveling to Edo State

The NYSC camp is located at; Okada Grammar School, Okada, Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Edo State.

Benin Airport serves air travellers in and around the state. Travellers by road might have to travel to the Benin City, the capital, first, depending on the location in the country they are coming from. There are buses that travel to the camp from Benin.

Edo is a state in the south-south geopolitical zone of Nigeria; Benin City is the capital. Edo State was created in 1991.
It is bounded by the states of Kogi to the northeast and east, Anambra to the east, Delta to the southeast and south, and Ondo to the west and northwest; the Niger River flows along the state’s eastern boundary. The state is made up of 18 local government areas.

People and Culture
Edo state is made up of three major ethnic groups; Edo (Binis), Esan and Afemai and a minority of Akoko Edo. All the ethnic groups within the state share similarities; these manifest in their religious worship, folklore dances, festivals, arts and crafts.
The State has a high presence of residents from across the country and the world because of its cosmopolitan tendencies. Benin City the capital was one of the foremost destinations of Europeans during their exploration of Africa continent.

Geography and Climate
The climate is typically tropical with two major seasons- the wet (rainy) and the dry seasons. The wet season comes between April and November and the dry season between December and March.
The average annual temperature is 26.1 degrees Celsius.

Notable Places
Important cities and towns include Benin, Ekpoma, Auchi, Uromi, Ubiaja, Ewu, Igarra, Abudu, irrua, Okpella, Uzebba, Afuze, Ibillo, Urhonigbe and Sabongida-Ora.
Edo state, particularly Benin City is known for its rich historical site and culture. Some of the notable places to visit in the state include; Benin Brass Work (found across the city), Okomu National Park, Oba’s Palace, Benin City, Benin City Museum, Ososo Tourist Centre etc.
The universities in the state include; University of Benin, Benin City; Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma; Edo University, Iyahmo; Igbinedion University, Okada; Benson Idahosa University, Benin.

Interesting Fact
Edo state was a part of the then mid-western region of Nigeria, also formally known as Bendel state.
