Located in south-south geopolitical zone of Nigeria, Rivers State was created out of the old Eastern Region in 1967. Its capital is Port Harcourt.
It is bordered by the states of Anambra and Imo on the north, Abia and Akwa Ibom on the east, and Bayelsa and Delta on the west. The state is divided into 23 local government areas.
People and Culture
Rivers state is ethnically diverse; the various ethnicities include, Abua, Andoni, Ekpeye, Engenni, Etche, lbani, lkwerre, Kalabari, Ndoni, Okrika, Ogoni etc. These ethnic groups have co-existed for centuries.
Fishing and farming are the principal occupations of the region. The state is also one of the oil producing states in Nigeria.
Geography and Climate
The landscape of the state is dominated by networks of rivers and mangrove swamps.
Rainfall in Rivers State is seasonal, variable and heavy. Generally, rain occurs, on the average, every month of the year, but with varying duration. The state is characterised by high rainfall, which decreases from south to north.

Important cities and Town include; Port Harcourt, Bonny, Degema, Ahoada, Okrika, Opobo, Gokana. Notable sites include Port Harcourt Tourist Beach; Rivers State Museum; Zoological Garden, Port Harcourt; Cultural Centre, Port Harcourt; Statue of King Jaja of Opobo; Upper Orashi Forest Reserve, Biseni Forest etc.
Institutions of higher learning include University of Port Harcourt, Choba; Rivers State University, and the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education.
Interesting Fact
After the discovery of crude oil in Oloibiri in 1956, Port Harcourt exported the first shipload from Nigeria in 1958. In July 2012, UNESCO, IPA, IBF, and IFLA named Port Harcourt the World Book Capital for the year 2014, making her the 14th city in the world to be selected as World Book Capital and the first in Black Africa.
