Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria. It is located in the centre of the country as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). It is bordered by the states of Niger to the West and North, Kaduna to the northeast, Nasarawa to the east and south and Kogi to the southwest.
A planned city, it was built in the 1980s, to replace Lagos as the capital on 12 December 1991. It consists of 5 local government areas.

People and Culture
The largest indigenous groups in Abuja are the Gbabyi which is also known as the Gwaris. Other ethnic groups in the territory include the Bassas, Gades, Gwandaras, Koros and Ganaganas, all of which have deep affiliation with the Kwa language groups dominant in the present middle belt area.
Abuja has representation from all ethnic groups in Nigeria due to its status as the nation’s capital.

Geography and Climate
The FCT has two main seasons; the rainy season which is between April and October, and the dry season which is between November and March.
The FCT experiences three weather conditions annually. This includes a warm, humid rainy season and a blistering dry season.  In between the two, there is a brief interlude of harmattan occasioned by the northeast trade wind, with the main feature of dust haze and dryness.

Notable Places
Notable districts include Garki, Wuse, Asokoro, Maitama, and Lugbe, and towns such as Kubwa, Gwagwalada, Gwarinpa, Karu, and Nyanya which have become closely linked together with a good road network.
Notable sites include Aso Rock, The National House of Assembly, ECOWAS Headquarters, the National Mosque, the National Ecumenical Centre and the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Interesting Fact
In Africa, Abuja is the only capital city that was built from ground up solely for the purpose of being the capital city.
